From there, here’s a quick breakdown to guide your decision:

If your cake has a lot going on…

Opt for a slightly smaller topper (around 1–4cm narrower than the cake). This allows your design to complement the cake without overwhelming it.

If your cake is clean and minimal…

Let the topper shine! Go for a topper that matches the cake diameter or is just 1–2cm smaller. This helps make the topper the star of the show.

💡 Tip: Avoid choosing a topper wider than the cake itself — this can throw off the balance of your design.

Example: A Simple Cake That Pops

For my daughter’s birthday, I used a 15cm round cake with a 15cm wide topper that said “One”. The cake itself was simple and clean, so the topper really stood out — creating that perfect “wow” moment.
