Cake Topper Sizing Guide: Find the Perfect Fit for Your Cake

Whether you're decorating a homemade masterpiece or a professionally made centrepiece, a cake topper is the finishing touch that brings your design to life. But when it comes to choosing the right size, things can get a little tricky — especially if you’re new to the party-planning world.

That’s why we’ve put together this easy sizing guide to help you choose the perfect topper for your cake.

How to Choose the Right Cake Topper Size

One of the most common questions we get is: “How do I know what size topper I need?” And the answer always starts with one simple thing — knowing the size (diameter) of your cake.

From there, here’s a quick breakdown to guide your decision:

If your cake has a lot going on…

Opt for a slightly smaller topper (around 1–4cm narrower than the cake). This allows your design to complement the cake without overwhelming it.

If your cake is clean and minimal…

Let the topper shine! Go for a topper that matches the cake diameter or is just 1–2cm smaller. This helps make the topper the star of the show.

💡 Tip: Avoid choosing a topper wider than the cake itself — this can throw off the balance of your design.

Example: A Simple Cake That Pops

For my daughter’s birthday, I used a 15cm round cake with a 15cm wide topper that said “One”. The cake itself was simple and clean, so the topper really stood out — creating that perfect “wow” moment.

Multi-Tiered Cakes

If you’re decorating a multi-tiered cake, use the top tier as your reference. Your topper should be the same width or slightly smaller than the top tier to ensure it sits neatly and proportionally.

Consider the Lettering

Keep in mind: the height of your topper can vary based on the number of letters in your text. For example, a 15cm wide topper that says “Max” will appear taller than one that says “Stephanie” due to spacing.
